We are a large, multicultural primary school situated in Newham, East London, with excellent transport links to Central London and Essex, that will be improved further when the new Crossrail opens shortly.
Sheringham is a diverse community with pupils coming from a wide range of different backgrounds. There are over 50 home languages represented by pupils at our school. Many of our families have significant challenges to overcome and our strong social inclusion team leads the work in supporting our families to ensure that the pupils can get the best from their time with us. There is a great deal of social housing surrounding Sheringham, and this means that our mobility is exceptionally high. Our outcomes for pupils show that the longer pupils stay at Sheringham the more likely it is that they will make the progress required to at least match national expectations when they leave our school
Sheringham is a vibrant learning community with a highly collaborative culture where staff and children respect each other and work as a team to learn the best we can. We believe that children work best when learning together, that it is important everyone in the organisation values everyone else, and that we, as staff, are also always learning – striving to be the best school that we can be.
We believe, and our children believe, that almost anything can be learned with sufficient time and effort. We dislike putting children in boxes with terms like ‘clever’ and ‘low-abilty’ and instead encourage children to be resilient in the face of challenge, and persistent in reaching their goals. We believe that we have a responsibility to ensure that all our children succeed – not in a quick, superficial sense but in a deeper way where children can take the required skills and knowledge and apply them in complex ways. Education is not a race to see who can get to the end the fastest – we believe that we can extend and support children within their own age group curriculum. This is how our children will be best prepared for secondary school and life beyond.
Our curriculum provides a number of frameworks and programmes to support teachers and to ensure that all of our pupils have a quality entitlement. In mathematics we use the Maths No Problem, Singapore Mathematics Programme. In Reading we use RWI and the Destination Reader philosophy developed by the Hackney Learning Trust. Much of the rest of our curriculum is theme based in question focused ‘learning challenges’ which have been developed using the Focus Education learning challenges as an initial starting point. All of these programmes have been carefully chosen to meet the needs of our pupils, match our philosophy of teaching, and to ensure that teachers are professional adapt their teaching to their own class.
A culture of formative assessment and growth mindset is at the heart of teaching and learning at our school. We have worked extensively with Shirley Clarke over several years and our learning journey is referenced by her as a model to follow. We are continually developing our pedagogy, through experimentation, action research and use of best-practice models. We have developed a culture where our staff actively seek to improve their practice.
Staff Well-Being is highly valued at Sheringham. In spring 2016 we commissioned the Education Support Partnership to carry out a Work Life survey on our behalf, and we were very pleased to find that staff at Sheringham overwhelmingly enjoy working at Sheringham, feel valued, and share a common commitment to meeting the needs of our pupils. As well as the range of benefits offered in all Learning in Harmony Trust Schools at Sheringham we organise a regular range of social events that are attended by all of the staff, including an annual ten-pin bowling evening paid for by the school.

The Learning in Harmony Trust was formed in September 2014 by Sheringham Primary School and JFK Special School. In 2015, we were joined by two other Newham schools, Upton Cross Primary School and Hartley Primary School, and three further schools joined us in the first term of the 2016-17 school year - Blenheim Primary School and Greenways Primary School, all of which are located in Southend. Drew Primary School, also in Newham, joined us in January 2017. The latest school to join the trust is Temple Sutton Primary and Early Years School March 2018. We do expect to further increase our number of schools and expand our geographical range in the near future, but there is no intention to outgrow our capacity. We want to be big enough to sustainably do all the amazing things we want to do, but small enough to still know each other very well. For us, learning in harmony doesn't mean all schools have to be the same. We are bound together by our belief that by working in partnership as one organisation we can make a significant difference to the children and young people in our schools. We are proud to have both similarities and differences as schools, and see this diversity as a strength. Our shared values unite us.
With 8 schools situated in East London and in coastal Essex, staff working within our Trust have the opportunity to embrace a diverse range of experiences, from inner city multi-ethnic Newham down to Southend on Sea, only a 45 minute train journey away. Our range of schools provide a number of rich experiences for staff and students alike. With a number of good and outstanding Infant, Junior and Primary Schools, as well as a fantastic split-site Special School, our staff need look no further when it comes to career development.
